Position Summary

The Area Safety Coordinator will foster and maintain a proactive approach to safety and will promote an employee-centered safety work culture. He/she will report directly to the corporate safety director.  THIS POSITION IS LOCATED IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA.

The Area Safety Coordinator, as a minimum, must have completed the 30 hour OSHA Construction safety class or its equivalent.  In addition, this position is required to have a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Safety from an accredited program, minimum of five (5) years of construction safety experience. 

The Area Safety Coordinator will support and assist the field workforce.  They will perform safety training, continually evaluate job site for hazards and implement corrective measures.  They will also purchase and maintain safety equipment necessary for the job site and assist the onsite a management team with day to day activities.  The Coordinator will be expected to travel.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Conduct new employee orientations and ensure compliance with Area drug testing program.
  • Develop and conduct training as needed at the project including, but not limited to, fall protection, confined space, personal protective equipment, first aid/CPR, signal person and Hazard Communication.
  • Write review and modify Area specific safety policies and procedures
  • Write and lead weekly safety meetings at the project
  • Help ensure job site compliance with Federal, State and Local Regulations as well as Corporate Policies and Procedures
  • Assist Area Superintendents and foreman with implementing safe work practices in daily activities
  • Lead incident investigation efforts & document findings and assistant in developing lessons learned to help prevent reoccurrence.
  • Job site safety inspections (inspection of power tools, cords, hazards, etc.)
  • PPE inspections, order and replace, administer training
  • Purchase and Maintain equipment including full body harnesses and lanyards
  • Respirators fit testing and familiarity with various types
  • Assist in development of daily Job Safety Analysis (JSA's)
  • Confined Space
  • IH Monitoring for example confined spaces, Silica, Noise, etc.
  • Collect, review, correct and evaluate JSAs, provide feedback to on site management


  • Bachelor's Degree in Safety Science or related degree from an accredited program.
  • 5+ years of safety experience in general construction industry, preferably civil infrastructure, heavy highway and marine construction and Underwater Divers.
  • Completion of the 30 hour OSHA Construction safety class or its equivalent.
  • OSHA 500 Trainer and First Aid CPR Instructor preferred.
  • Must be willing to accept travel to the job sites in different states.
  • Detail-oriented, excellent communicator with the ability to multi-task, prioritize and take initiative.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (especially Word and Excel), PowerPoint and other related computer software.
  • The Area Safety Coordinator must have a comfortable working/teaching knowledge of the following:
    • Hazard Communication
    • Use of P.P.E.
    • First-Aid/CPR & AED
    • Trench Shoring
    • Confined Space
    • Respiratory Protection
    • Fall Protection
    • Blood Borne Pathogens
    • OSHA Regulations
    • Forklift
    • Silica
    • Mobile Cranes
    • Rigging & Signaling

Work Environment:

  • Works both indoors, outdoors and on or near water.
  • Environment can be dirty and noisy.
  • Wears appropriate protective clothing and equipment including gloves and ear protection.
